Phoebe Marchant is a very well read child who realizes that she is NOT the typical orphan Her father s death has made her a very wealthy heiress faced with being cared for by a stepmother she s never met Phoebe has been able to rid herself of several other stepmothers, but this one ignores spiders, rattling chains, and other tactics Phoebe employs And Vicki the new stepmother admits the money she ll receive as Mr Marchant s widow is very important to her Add to the problem a very faithful Phoebe Marchant is a very well read child who realizes that she is NOT the typical orphan Her father s death has made her a very wealthy heiress faced with being cared for by a stepmother she s never met Phoebe has been able to rid herself of several other stepmothers, but this one ignores spiders, rattling chains, and other tactics Phoebe employs And Vicki the new stepmother admits the money she ll receive as Mr Marchant s widow is very important to her Add to the problem a very faithful butler, Henry, who tries to protect Phoebe from Vicki Now set them all down in the desert, a foreign environment for Phoebe and Henry, and put Phoebe into a regular school with kids who test her Wouldn t life be less stressful if she just went to the horrid boarding school in Switzerland so she would no longer be involved in a tug of war between Vicki and Henry Readers who wish to be wealthy and well dressed may be surprised by this young girl who may be the richest, yet miserable, twelve year old in America

This is a chapter book I picked up, needing something light and not very engaging to fall asleep to while working nights Entirely sufficient as a chapter book, and at least partly set in the Sonoran Desert bonus
